What Are Locking Carabiners?
Most carabiners have an open gate, secured by a mechanical fitting and pressure applied via an internal spring. Ordinary carabiners can be opened by simply pressing on the gate arm. The reasoning behind the basic design is that for an accidental opening to occur, the carabiner gate arm would have to be pressed on from the outside. This is considered to be unlikely, plus, your climbing rope is usually only expected to apply outward pressure from within the loop. Therefore, ordinary, non-locking carabiners are considered safe for most applications.
A locking carabiner, by contrast, incorporates a metal sleeve that slides over the gate opening, making it impossible (or extremely unlikely) for the gate to open without the user intending it to open. The sleeve has to be unlocked or unscrewed before it can be maneuvered out of the locked position.
So, when might you need something like this? There are seven distinct instances that call for locking carabiners.
When to Use Locking Carabiners
1. For Belay
Any time there is a reasonable expectation that your rope may press on the gate from an unexpected direction, that is a reason for locking carabiners.
2. Belay from Above
When another is belaying above you, that is even more reason to use locking carabiners, since the consequences of failure are more severe.
3. Attaching to an Anchor
Any time you attach your line to an anchor, which you hope to be able to stop a fall by itself, then a locking carabiner is appropriate and recommended.
4. For Top-Rope Anchors
Most of the time when a carabiner is in danger of opening, you will be close to it, but not with top-rope.
5. As Bail Carabiners
Any time you have to abandon a route, it's best to use a locking carabiner for your last anchor on that route.
6. Critical Loads
Any load that you cannot afford to drop, (including yourself), should get a locking carabiner, and using steel carabiners is recommended.
7. Advanced Climbing Systems
Advanced climbers performing difficult or unorthodox maneuvers should use lockers almost exclusively.

FAQs about Locking Carabiners
A regular carabiner has a gate that opens easily (usually via spring pressure), while a locking carabiner includes an extra mechanism—such as a sleeve, twist, or auto-lock—that prevents the gate from opening unintentionally. This makes locking carabiners safer in high-risk or critical load situations.
It depends on how much convenience versus safety redundancy you need.
- Screw-locks are simple and durable—great for anchor work or setups you don’t need to open frequently.
- Twist-lock or auto-locks allow faster clipping/unclipping, ideal when you’re frequently handling gear or moving.
- Triple-locks provide extra safety (two-step operation) but can be slower to use. If you often wear gloves or work in dirty or muddy environments, simpler styles may be more reliable.
If you want lightweight gear for long climbs, aluminum is ideal—light but strong enough for most sport or indoor uses. For heavy loads, rescue work, anchors, or situations with high wear, abrasion, or impact, steel is tougher and longer-lasting (though heavier).
The key numbers are:
- Major axis (gate closed)
- Gate open
- Minor axis
These are usually expressed in kilonewtons (kN). Also check for safety or industry certifications like UIAA, EN, or ANSI. Always choose carabiners that meet or exceed the strength requirements for your climbing or load type.
Regularly check for cracks, sharp burrs, or corrosion. Ensure the gate opens and closes smoothly and that the locking mechanism operates properly (sleeve threads clean, auto-gates moving freely). Clean off grit, wash with mild soap, and let the carabiner dry completely before storing. Retire any carabiner that fails inspection or has been involved in a serious fall.
It depends on the application. For belays or anchors, you may want larger gate clearance to accommodate big ropes, multiple strands, or pulley setups. For racking or quickdraws, smaller and lighter carabiners are more convenient. Always match the carabiner size to your rope thickness and system requirements.
Yes. Look for materials with high corrosion resistance (stainless steel, galvanized finishes, or anodized aluminum). Gate and lock designs that resist freezing or jamming are preferable. After exposure to saltwater, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry completely.
